The Amaraya Foundation has once again demonstrated its commitment to humanitarian service and community development by providing ₦2.5 million to settle the outstanding medical bill of Mr. Ignatius Chimeze Megwa, popularly known as Noble Mmegwa, a native of Umumkpade in Oru Ahiara Autonomous Community, Imo State.
The intervention, which facilitated Mr. Megwa’s discharge from the New Healing Stream Specialist Hospital, Egbeada, Imo State, followed a successful but complicated surgical procedure to remove a massive abdominal tumour weighing approximately 9.5 kilogrammes.
Mr. Megwa had remained in the hospital after the surgery because of his inability to settle the outstanding medical expenses. Although family members, friends and other well-wishers had rallied around him and provided financial assistance, the medical bill continued to rise beyond what they could afford.
In a bid to understand the circumstances surrounding the appeal for assistance, the Director of Programmes of Amaraya Foundation, Dr. Udechukwu Egbuhuzor, engaged Mr. Megwa in a brief interaction and asked whether he had previously received assistance from friends, family members and well-wishers before reaching out to the foundation.
Responding, Mr. Megwa expressed profound appreciation to the various groups, family members and friends who had supported him throughout his ordeal. He disclosed that the total hospital bill had risen to an amount significantly higher than ₦2.5 million, adding that after exhausting the available avenues of assistance and being unable to raise additional funds, he remembered the humanitarian support of Amaraya Foundation last year when the President of the foundation sponsored the scan and other laboratory investigations.
According to him, it was the foundation’s consistent intervention in the lives of vulnerable members of the society that encouraged him to reach out to its President for assistance.
His appeal received an immediate response, as Dist. High Chief Amarachi Kingsley Ogu authorized the foundation to intervene and settle the outstanding hospital bill, thereby enabling the patient to leave the hospital and continue his recovery at home.
The intervention was formally followed up on Saturday, August 29, 2026, when a delegation of the Amaraya Foundation visited the patient at the hospital to oversee the payment and discharge arrangements.
The delegation was led by the Director of Administration, Mr. Onyewuenyi Chukwuemeka Kaycee, and included the Director of Programmes, Dr. Udechukwu Egbuhuzor; Rev. Sr. Akunna Grace John-Emezi (HHCJ); Mr. Maduka Uwa; Ms. Eucharia Erege; and Mr. Ekene Nwankwo.
During the interaction, Mr. Onyewuenyi Kaycee encouraged Mr. Megwa to remain hopeful and appreciative of the assistance he had received. He explained that the foundation’s humanitarian activities were sustained partly through the generosity of few individuals who made donations to support this interventions.
He therefore urged the patient not only to appreciate the assistance received but also to remember in his prayers the individuals who had contributed to the humanitarian efforts, stressing that their generosity had helped make interventions such as his possible.
Rev. Sr. Akunna John-Emezi offered prayers for Mr. Megwa and encouraged him to reciprocate the kindness he had experienced by extending assistance to people in need whenever he had the capacity to do so.
She further advised him to take his recovery seriously, adhere to medical instructions and completely avoid alcohol and other lifestyles that could undermine his healing and recovery.
The Executive Members of Umu Mbaise United, Owerri, who were present during the visit, expressed immense joy and appreciation for the foundation’s intervention. They described the gesture as timely and life-saving and conveyed their heartfelt gratitude to Dist. High Chief Amarachi Kingsley Ogu, the President and Founder of Amaraya Foundation, for his continued humanitarian service to the people of Mbaise and beyond.
The executives particularly praised the foundation for responding when Mr. Megwa was at a critical point in his recovery and could neither afford to settle his hospital bill nor secure further assistance.
The management of New Healing Stream Specialist Hospital also commended the Amaraya Foundation for its swift response and commitment to humanitarian service. The hospital’s Human Resource Manager expressed appreciation for the foundation’s intervention, noting that such timely support can make a significant difference in the lives of patients who are medically fit for discharge but are constrained by financial difficulties.
Mr. Megwa, visibly grateful for the intervention, thanked Dist. High Chief Amarachi Kingsley Ogu and the entire Amaraya Foundation for coming to his aid at a moment when he had exhausted other avenues of support.
The intervention further underscores the Amaraya Foundation’s longstanding commitment to supporting vulnerable individuals and communities through humanitarian assistance, healthcare interventions, education, STEM advocacy and other community-development initiatives.
The visit ended on a celebratory note, with prayers and words of encouragement for Mr. Megwa’s complete recovery, followed by a group photograph involving the Amaraya Foundation delegation, hospital personnel, executives of Umu Mbaise United and the beneficiary as he prepared to leave the hospital.
